SICKNESS' CAUSED FROM APPEARANCE!!

To some, the way media affects all different types of people may seem like an innocent thing, but to others it can be deadly! When people are so mentally effected by the way they look they could be hazardous to themselves. Women can develop illness' such as bulimia and anorexia. Bulimia is defined as habitual disturbance in eating behavior mostly affecting young women of normal weight, characterized by frequent episodes of grossly excessive food intake followed by self-induced vomiting to avert weight gain. Bulimia can be found in mostly teen girls but anyone could develop bulimia. This can cause damage to one's hair, teeth, and overall body.
For men athletic competition can trigger eating disorders in men. Being muscular is a desire. The overall issue that ignites the development of eating disorders in men are the same as women which having low self-esteem and may suffer from depression, abusive histories, demanding families and overall stress level.
Anorexia is the loss of appetite and not being able to eat, especially as a result of disease. When people are not satisfied with their bodies this can cause mental damage in which they train their bodies to not want food. The  body needs food to survive so therefore starving oneself can be deadly.
Both these diseases can be treated through rehabilitation but it takes a lot of work and commitment from the person with the illness. Many people with these diseases have mentally become adapt to thinking of themselves in an extreme negative way. Often with this disease even after rehab the thoughts of negativity don't fade away.

Media Influences The World!

For decades the media has been influencing people of all ages. Everything from television to magazines to movies effects the way that people dress and look. Because people refer to the media for the newest fashions and latest styles, people are constantly being manipulated on appearance because of the media. For instance, in teen magazines such as seventeen and cosmo girl, writers incorporate pictures of the newest styles and how teens should dress for certain times of the year or events.
Celebrities in Hollywood have excessive amounts of money and people constantly working on their appearance for them. In my opinion, what the average person doesn't understand is that these celebrities have the extra money to always get their hair and makeup done, to have personal stylists make them look glamorous, and hire plastic surgeons to make them appear younger and "beautiful."
Magazines additionally have pages with the titles such as "best beach bodies" and the bodies that aren't a perfect ten are looked down upon. Who makes the decision of what is a perfect body?  The media. If people only judged their own bodies based the on the realistic people around them I think that everyone would be less self conscious. People would then not refer to the media to judge their appearance. As you can realize the media influences the way many people think and feel about their body image.

Greatness can be found where you least expect it

The quote "You can't judge a book by it's cover," is proved when up and coming star Susan Boyle, from Britain's got talent, proved the world wrong with her angelic voice. A few weeks ago the middle age women performed, "I Dreamed a Dream" and left judges, the audience, and people around the world watching at home speechless.
Susan Boyle is a middle aged from Blackburn Scotland who proved everyone wrong with her voice despite the way the she looks. Rude comments have been thrown toward Boyle about her appearance her whole life. Rosie O' Donald refers to her as "Shrek." These rude remarks can cause serious mental diseases to someone. Critics say that the best part of the joy was watching the crude and obnoxious faces os judges Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan. The audience and judges shifted in an moment from judgmental to open-mouthed admiration.
Susan Boyle is unmarried and unkissed ( as she said in an interview), has no job and lives with her cat in a small cottage. She was use to only singing at her local church. Because body image and appearance effects so much of our views and opinions of others Boyle has become a hero to people dreaming of being geared away from obscurity to fame. Additionally, to those who cheer her and look beyond her looks in a world that is so shallow. The audiences and judges " were initially blinded by entrenched stereotypes of age, class, gender, and Western beauty standards, Ms. Pogrebin added, " until her book was opened, and everybody saw what was inside."

The audience and judges “were initially blinded by entrenched stereotypes of age, class, gender and Western beauty standards,” she added, “until her book was opened, and everybody saw what was inside.”

Watch the youtube video below of Susan Boyle and ask yourself do looks really matter?

Body Image throughout the ages

“A woman’s self-image is the very foundation of her personality, and hence, she acts like the sort of person she thinks and believes she is.”- anonymous

Since the beginning of time women have always been taught to conform with how they dress and their body image. Even in the Victorian Era women were taught to lace up their corsets to make them have a smaller body frame. The typical body image of women in the late 19th century was called the "Gibson Girl." Gibson's Girl was the body image that was portrayed for all women to have. When women started rebelling from the corsets and long dresses was in the 1920's. Flappers were rebellious girls that wore shorter dresses and stockings. These women showed off their knees. ( How scandalous!) Now a days it is socially acceptable for women to wear pants but women are still constantly worried about their body image and whether the way they look is socially acceptable in society. The media is greatly at fault. Women of all ages compare themselves to the women they seen in magazines and tv who have personal makeup artists, stylists, and tons of money. This image that they see is not how the average person should look. Not everyone has these resources.

The quote above is meaningful because if a women is happy with the way is then she will be happy with her life. If a girl has an eating disorder such as anorexia because she is not satisfied with the way she looks, most likely she will act depressed and upset. They key to loving life is learning to love yourself and be satisfied with your image. If you believe you are a certain way then you will become that way to everyone else around you.
